On 13th July 1947, a referendum in Sylhet, a Muslim-majority district in Assam, resulted in a vote to join Pakistan. This decision integrated Sylhet into East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), reflecting the Muslim League’s success in mobilizing regional support for the creation of Pakistan during the partition process.

Pakistan’s first constitution came into force on 23 March 1956, turning the country into the Islamic Republic and ending its status as a dominion[12](https://historypak.com/constitution-of-1956/).
