Climate Zones of Pakistan

Geographically, Pakistan is located in the northern hemisphere, positioned just north of the Tropic of Cancer. Its territory extends between the latitudes of $25^{\circ}$ North and $35^{\circ}$ North, which places it in a subtropical zone with significant seasonal variations.

Pakistan is characterized by a continental type of climate. This means the country experiences significant differences between summer and winter temperatures, as well as distinct variations between day and night, primarily due to its vast land area and distance from the moderating influence of the sea in most regions.

During the winter months, thick fog is a recurring meteorological phenomenon in Pakistan. It is most prevalent and long-lasting in the plains of Upper Sindh, the central districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and throughout the Punjab province, often disrupting daily life for several weeks.

The Southwest Monsoon brings essential summer rains to the majority of Pakistan between June and September. However, certain northern and western regions, including western Balochistan, FATA (Tribal Areas), Chitral, and Gilgit-Baltistan, are largely excluded from this monsoon system's main influence.

Monsoon rains in Pakistan are quite heavy by nature. When these rains interact with northern westerly waves, they can trigger significant or even catastrophic flooding, particularly in the upper parts of the country and along the major river basins.

Continental air masses dominate the atmosphere in Pakistan during dry spells when there is no precipitation. This dry air originates from the landmass and contributes to the extreme temperature swings characteristic of the country's climate.

Skardu, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, is officially recorded as the coldest place in Pakistan. It experiences extremely harsh winters with temperatures dropping significantly below freezing due to its high altitude and northern location.

Nokundi, situated in the Chagai District of Balochistan, is known as the driest place in Pakistan. It receives very minimal annual rainfall, making it one of the most arid desert environments in the country.

Jacobabad in Sindh is officially recognized as the hottest place in Pakistan. During the peak of summer, it consistently records some of the highest temperatures in the world, often exceeding $50^{\circ}\text{C}$.

The Arabian Sea coastline represents the lowest point (0 meters elevation) for Pakistan. All other geographical features are measured relative to this sea level point.

K2, also known as Mount Godwin-Austen, is the highest point in Pakistan and the second-highest mountain in the world, standing at an elevation of 8,611 meters.

Pakistan's climatic calendar includes four seasons. The retreating monsoon period occurs during October and November, serving as a transitional phase between the summer rainy season and the cool winter.

The winter season in Pakistan is generally characterized by cool and dry weather. It typically spans from December through February, though temperatures begin to drop in late November in northern areas.
