Constitution-Making Struggles (1950–1956)

Sheikh Anwar was appointed as the first Muslim Advocate General of West Punjab following the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan in 1947. This role was crucial in establishing the legal framework and judicial processes for the newly formed province.

Pakistan officially became a member of the United Nations on September 30, 1947, just over a month after gaining independence. This was a significant step in gaining international recognition and participating in global diplomatic affairs.

Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan served as the Minister for Food, Agriculture, and Health in the first cabinet of Pakistan. He was a prominent leader of the Muslim League and played a vital role in managing the early administrative challenges of the country.

The elections for the First Constituent Assembly were held in 1946 in British India. The members elected from the Muslim-majority areas that became part of Pakistan eventually formed the First Constituent Assembly of Pakistan.

The process of forming the constituent assembly was finalized in July 1947. It was tasked with drafting the first constitution of Pakistan and acting as the interim federal legislature of the country.

The First Constituent Assembly initially consisted of 69 members. Later, ten additional members were added to represent various states and regions, bringing the total number of members to 79.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah delivered his historic presidential address to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on August 11, 1947. In this speech, he laid out his vision for a democratic, inclusive, and tolerant Pakistan.

The first cabinet of Pakistan, headed by Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan, was officially sworn in on August 15, 1947. This group was responsible for managing the immediate administrative and social challenges following the partition.

Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar was the first Minister for Communications in Pakistan. He was a seasoned politician and a key leader in the Pakistan Movement, ensuring the continuity of postal and telegraphic services.

Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister, also held the portfolios of Defence and Commonwealth Relations. This allowed him to oversee the national security and external relations of the fledgling state directly.

Sir Zafarullah Khan served as the first Foreign Minister of Pakistan. He was an eminent jurist and successfully represented Pakistan in various international forums, including the United Nations, particularly on the Kashmir issue.

Ismail Ibrahim Chundrigar was the first Minister of Trade, Industry, and Public Works. His role was critical in establishing Pakistan's initial economic and commercial policies and developing necessary infrastructure.

Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan presented the Objectives Resolution to the Constituent Assembly on March 7, 1949. It defined the basic principles on which the future constitution of Pakistan was to be based.

Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, addressed the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on August 14, 1947, in Karachi. This address formally marked the transfer of power and the birth of the independent state of Pakistan.

Following significant language movements in East Pakistan, the Constituent Assembly passed a resolution in April 1954 to recognize both Urdu and Bengali as the state languages of Pakistan. This was later formalized in the 1956 constitution.

Governor-General Malik Ghulam Mohammad dissolved the First Constituent Assembly of Pakistan on October 24, 1954, citing its failure to complete the task of constitution-making and a lack of public representation. This event led to a significant constitutional crisis.

Pakistan formally joined the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in 1979 during the summit held in Havana, Cuba. Before this, Pakistan was closely aligned with Western defense blocs like SEATO and CENTO.
