Resume vs CV: Which One Should You Use in Pakistan?
"Resume" and "CV" are used almost interchangeably in Pakistan, but they are two different documents with different purposes. Sending a five-page academic CV to a bank, or a one-page resume to a Fulbright committee, signals that you didn't understand the ask. This guide clears up the confusion so you always submit the right document.
The core difference
A resume is a short (one to two page), targeted summary of your skills and experience aimed at a specific job. A CV (curriculum vitae) is a long, detailed record of your entire academic and professional history. Length and purpose are the two biggest distinguishers.
| Feature | Resume | CV |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 1–2 pages | 2+ pages, no strict limit |
| Purpose | Apply for a specific job | Academia, research, scholarships |
| Focus | Skills and achievements | Full history, publications, grants |
| Tailoring | Customized per job | Comprehensive, rarely trimmed |
| Common use in Pakistan | Private sector, banks, MNCs | HEC, Fulbright, universities |
When to use a resume
Use a resume for the vast majority of jobs in Pakistan:
- Private companies and multinationals
- Banks and financial institutions
- Startups and IT firms
- Sales, marketing, and operations roles
Keep it tight, role-specific, and achievement-focused. Build it with our ATS structure guide and pick a layout from the template gallery.
When to use a CV
Use a CV when depth and completeness matter more than brevity:
- HEC overseas and indigenous scholarships
- Fulbright and Commonwealth applications
- University teaching and lecturer positions
- Research assistant and PhD applications
A CV includes sections a resume omits: publications, conferences, research projects, grants, teaching experience, and references. See our dedicated Scholarship CV and Academic CV templates.
What about government jobs (FPSC, PPSC)?
Most commission-based jobs use a standardized application form rather than a free-form resume, but you'll often attach a CV-style document. Keep it factual, complete, and aligned with the form. Our Career Guidance section covers commission applications in detail.
Quick decision guide
- Applying for a job in a company? → Resume
- Applying for a scholarship or academic post? → CV
- Unsure? → Read the advertisement; it almost always specifies which.
