Provinces & Administrative Districts

Punjab is divided into the highest number of administrative divisions and districts in Pakistan, reflecting its large population and the need for decentralized management of its extensive rural and urban areas.

The Baloch people are the largest ethnic group in Balochistan, followed by a significant Pashtun population in the northern parts of the province. The cultural and linguistic diversity of the province is a defining characteristic.

Mohenjo-Daro is located in the Larkana District of Sindh. It is one of the most significant archaeological sites of the Indus Valley Civilization, dating back to 2500 BCE, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Taxila is located in the Rawalpindi District of Punjab. It was a major center of Gandhara civilization and is renowned for its archaeological ruins that include stupas, monasteries, and ancient city sites.

The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, extends into the southeastern part of Sindh province. It is the only fertile desert in the world and sustains a unique ecosystem and culture.

The Cholistan Desert, locally known as Rohi, is located in the Bahawalpur division of Punjab. It is famous for its nomadic culture and the historic Derawar Fort.

K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, is located in the Karakoram range within the Gilgit-Baltistan region. It is known as the 'Savage Mountain' due to the extreme difficulty of its ascent.

The Khyber Pass is a legendary mountain pass that connects the city of Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with Kabul, Afghanistan. It has been a critical trade and invasion route for centuries.

The name 'Punjab' is derived from the Persian words 'Panj' (five) and 'Ab' (water), meaning 'Land of Five Rivers.' The five rivers are the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej, which irrigate the province's fertile plains.

Sialkot is located in north-eastern Punjab. It is an international hub for the manufacture of sporting goods and surgical instruments, contributing significantly to Pakistan's exports.

Kashmore District in Sindh is uniquely situated where it shares boundaries with the provinces of Punjab and Balochistan, making it a critical junction for inter-provincial trade and travel.

While the Governor is the constitutional head representing the federation, the Chief Minister is the elected administrative head (Chief Executive) of the provincial government who leads the cabinet.

The administrative structure of Pakistan flows from the Province to the Division, then to the District (Zila), followed by the Tehsil, and finally the Union Council at the grass-roots level.

Currently, Sindh is the largest producer of natural gas in Pakistan. While the first major gas discovery was in Sui (Balochistan) in 1952, fields in Sindh now provide the majority of the country's gas supply.

Balochistan is the most sparsely populated province. Due to its vast desert areas, mountainous terrain, and lack of water resources, the population density is significantly lower than in other parts of Pakistan.

Both Sindh and Balochistan share a southern border with the Arabian Sea. Sindh covers the eastern part of the coast including Karachi, while Balochistan covers the western part including Gwadar.
